S281 Extreme The Ultimate Saleen S281
Everyone ask, "what makes the Extreme so much different than the supercharged S281?" The answer is in all the components you can't see. Let me run you through what makes and Extreme so Extreme.
Exterior differences start with the carbon fiber front splitter and rear diffusor. Not only do these two components add a real muscle look to the car but serve as real air management to keep the Extreme glued to the road at higher speeds. A true must for any high performance machine.
Exterior
The solid rear quarter racing window is a no cost option that adds a sleek and clean look to the side profile of the Extreme. An exclusive Extreme option for the 2006 model year, now for 2007, an option on S281 3valve and S281SC models for a modest cost. Standard on the Extreme, the HID (High Intensity Discharge) headlights, provide better night time vision while giving a high-tech look to the front of the car. The HID headlights are an extra cost option on the S281 3valve and the S281SC.
Engine
The Extreme's 281 cubic inch V8 is nothing short of astounding. With 550hp and 525lb ft., this 3valves per cylinder engine seems as if it provides an endless amount of forward motivation. Zero to sixty times in the very low 4 second range is only hampered by the need for a stickier tire. The quarter miles will fly by in 12 seconds or better. So how does the Extreme achieve such numbers? During production, Saleen removes the engine from the Mustang GT donor car and re-engineers it with forged pistons, connecting rods and crank shaft all for that power and durability. The supercharger forces 12 lbs of boost into the engine with moderate boost levels at only 1/2 throttle. You feel this engine pull hard through 6100rpm's of tachometer travel. Special computer calibration along with a large Saleen designed air inlet tube from the air box and a 98mm mass air flow sensor all participate in creating all that horse power.
Massive 15" slotted and vented rotors and 6 piston calipers grace the front wheels with unbelievable stopping power. Standard on the Extreme, they are the same brakes you will find on the half a million dollar Saleen S7. A set of 14" slotted and vented rotors are found and the S281SC.

Transmission and clutch
Saleen installs a light weight aluminum flywheel to reduce rotating mass and channels all the Extremes power through a T-56 6speed manual transmission. A heavy duty clutch, balance aluminum driveshaft and Saleen's patented Max Grip differential with 4:10 gear ratio put the 525lb. ft. of torque to the ground. The Max Grip is a revolutionary, patented, competition proven system that dramatically improves the handling characteristics of the entire vehicle. Do not confuse this with a traditional limited slip differential. This is new technology only available through Saleen! Standard on the Extreme, the Max Grip is available as an option on other S281's.
Note that the Saleen designed air inlet tube is the same width from the throttle body to the mass air sensor. This allows an unrestrickted air flow that the engine needs to make 550hp.
